Album ini merupakan single kedua dari album studio berbahasa Korea pertama Blackpink yang akan datang, Blackpink: The Album.
Pada 23 Juli 2020, YG Entertainment merilis poster teaser untuk single kolaborasi baru antara Blackpink dan artis yang tidak disebutkan namanya, yang akan dirilis pada bulan Agustus.
Pada 28 Juli, band ini mengumumkan album studio Korea pertama mereka, The Album, akan dirilis pada 2 Oktober 2020. Pada 11 Agustus 2020, artis yang tidak disebutkan namanya terungkap adalah penyanyi Amerika Selena Gomez.
Pada 21 Agustus 2020, terungkap bahwa judul kolaborasi tersebut adalah "Ice Cream". Pada 24 Agustus, sebuah video teaser yang menampilkan Blackpink dan Gomez di video call bersama sementara lagu yang diputar di latar belakang dirilis.
Foto teaser Blackpink dan Gomez dirilis dari 24 Agustus hingga 26 Agustus. Foto teaser anggota Blackpink Jisoo dirilis pada 24 Agustus, foto anggota Jennie dan Rosé dirilis pada 25 Agustus, dan foto anggota Lisa serta Gomez dirilis pada 26 Agustus.
